State will delay tax returns due to shortage of money, employees

Intro: The Department of Revenue says tax payers will likely see a delay in their refunds this year, maybe as long as two months after filing deadline. RunTime:0:34

The department's spokesman Ted Farnen said, there is no guarantee tax payers will see their money before June 30.

Farnen said the State will put off paying some tax refunds because of the lack of revenue this year.

Description: There is just only so much money for refunds every month and we have to make sure, to be fiscally responsible, that there's the money there when we send out the refunds.
 
Farnen said those who filed for property tax credits have priority in receiving money because those credits are available to low income and disabled citizens.

The State Budget Office says it could be as long as June 30 before citizens see their refunds.

Revenue Department Spokesman Ted Farnen said the department will give priority to property tax credits, because they help low-income and disabled citizens.

Description: We made a decision to try and process those as quickly as possible because of who the recipients are. These are people...we all need the money, but they really really need the money.


Farnen said refunds will be returned faster if submitted before March because nearly one half of all returns are filed in the three weeks before April 15.

Department of Revenue Spokesman Ted Farnen said the department only has so much money each month to refund taxes, so some Missourians will have to wait.

Farnen said the department will give priority to property tax credits filed by low income and disabled Missourians because they need the money more urgently than other citizens.
