Sprinkler system to be require in Missouri nursing homes

Intro: The senate ruled Tuesday that every nursing home in Missouri will be required to have state-approved sprinkler systems.

The Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would require every nursing home in the Missouri to have up-to-date sprinkler systems.

Senate Sponsor, Republican Bill Stouffer (STOH-FER) said last year's version of the bill made facilities think twice about renovating.

Description: "If you renovate one room, then you would have to go through and do the whole facility that could cost half a million... a major... so what it does then, instead of fixing up facilities, it encourages facilities to let them run down."

This bill requires all facilities to make renovations when necessary.

Most nursing homes in Missouri are up to state standards, but those who need updates can apply for a state loan to help with costs.

Getting older often requires a little help getting around, and many elderly people rely on nursing homes to ease their aging.

Sponsor of the bill, Republican Senator Bill Stouffer (STOH-fer) said with some state funds, older Missourians can be more comfortable.

Description: "Everybody's more comfortable at home, they just feel better at home. If with a little grant money, we're talking 24-hundred dollars, if we can help with ramps or hospital beds or something like that to allow people to move out of the nursing home back home."
 
The bill will also require the Department of Health and Human Services to create programs for those who move back home.
