Flu rates are high

Intro:  The number of people diagnosed with the flu this year is significantly higher than previous years.

Wrap: The Missouri Department of Health reported there were 50 percent more cases of flu within the first month of this flu season compared to last year's. 

The department's spokesman Kit Wager says there has been more than 17-thousand confirmed cases of flu in the first month of flu season.

Description: "The first three weeks of the flu season basically from October 4th through the 24th we basically equaled the same number of flu cases we had all of last year."

Wager says the good thing is that despite this high number of cases, the number of emergency room visits because of flu has decreased.
