The Missouri House perfected a bill which would force voters to show ID when voting.

Jackson Republican Representative Bryan Pratt supports the bill and says it is common sense to prove your identity when voting.

Actuality:  PRATT1.WAV
Run Time: 00:10
Description: So when you have an issue as fundamental as voting to say you are who you are, shouldn't it be somewhat elementary to say, "You gotta show some form of an identification."

Democrats like House Minority Leader Paul LeVota say the bill will prevent the elderly and African-Americans from voting.

Actuality:  IDPAUL.WAV
Run Time: 00:11
Description: This is a shameful attempt to change the constitution to allow less people to vote. Make no arguments about it, that's exactly what this intent is.
The bill now needs to be third read and moved the Senate.

Democrats are vehemently against the bill.

St. Louis Democratic Representative Jamilah Nasheed says the bill discriminates against particular voters.

Actuality:  JAMID3.WAV
Run Time: 00:13
Description: The poor, the elderly, and I think that what really would the African American community. We're putting barriers after barriers after barriers in front of the African Americans in terms of stopping them from voting.

Bill sponsor Sedalia Republican Representative Stanley Cox says the bill is necessary to protect honest voters.

Actuality:  IDCOX.WAV
Run Time: 00:06
Description: It's a reasonable provision which will keep fraud from diminishing our vote.

The bill needs to be third read by the House and then sent to the Senate.

The bill was perfected along party lines with the Republicans holding the majority.A similar bill was passed by the governor in 2006 but was later deemed unconstitutional by the Missouri Supreme Court. St. Louis Republican Representative Tim Jones says not requiring identification for voters leads to more fraud.
Actuality:  JONES1.WAV
Run Time: 00:17
Description: If we're not going to confirm who is voting, who is over eighteen years of age, whether they are or not. Whether they're residents of this state and whether they're residents of the political subdivision, then we're spitting in the eyes of our founding fathers who did die for this fundamental right.
Motivation for the bill stems from the Supreme Court decision upholding Indiana's voter ID requirement.

Democrats are strongly opposed to the bill.
