Poverty rate up, food bank supply down

September 25, 2002

State Capital Bureau

The 1.8-percent increase in Missouri's poverty rate is affecting the food banks in the state. Martha Kang has the story in Jefferson City:

The Central Missouri Food Bank has already exceeded their last year's supply, with their busiest months approaching with the cold weather.

The bank's associate director Tim Rich says the state of the economy has had a hit on their supply, since their contributors now produce less, and so have less left over to donate.

Still, the bank has added 10 new families to its list to support, because of the explosive growth in demand for aid.
