    . Lawmakers React to Governor's Education Funding Plan (01/24/02)
    JEFFERSON CITY - State lawmakers from both political parties say they do not support an expansion of gaming to fund public education in Missouri.

    However, the governor does have at least one key ally: House Speaker Jim Kreider who reaffirmed his support for the governor's plan at a Thursday news conference.

    . Missouri's governor focuses on budget cuts in his budget address. (01/23/02)
    JEFFERSON CITY - The state's economic recession and declining state revenues dominated the governor's State of the State address to a joint session of Missouri's legislature Wednesday.

    The governor proposed expanding gambling and extra gambling fees as means to boost revenues to fund education.

    But he also announced budget cuts for many other areas of state services.

    His proposals to use gambling to boost funding for education came under immediate attack from both Republicand and Democratic legislators.

    GOP lawmakers also criticized the governor for leaving out of his legislative program some of the major issues of the session such as transportation and property tax changes.

    . University of Missouri Faces Cuts (01/23/02)
    JEFFERSON CITY - The University of Missouri system would face nearly a $50 million cut in its state appropriations for general education under the budget plan released Wednesday by Gov. Bob Holden.

    Under the plan, the University would get $411.3 million in state funds compared to the $460.5 million that had been appropriated by lawmakers last year for this budget year that ends on June 30.

    . Holden's Gambling Money Budget Proposal Draws Democrat, GOP Anger (01/23/02)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Bob Holden outlined his plan to help pay for education costs in his State of the State address Wednesday -- by wedding state funds to gambling riverboat revenue.

    Holden called for tax amnesty for gambling riverboats in Missouri, raising riverboat entry fees by $1, and removing limits on how much money patrons can lose.

    Holden's speech -- which addressed other issues than budget scantily, if at all -- also called for dipping into tobacco settlement money and tapping the state's Rainy Day Fund, which is designated for use in emergencies or economic downturns.


    . Planned Parenthood wins in Missouri Supreme Court Tuesday (01/22/02)
    JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri Supreme Court ruled that Planned Parenthood family-planning programs can continue to be funded through state appropriations.

    Anti-abortion legislators say they will continue to oppose public funding of family-planning programs which include abortions.

    . House leaders mate education and transportation proposals (01/22/02)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri voters would be faced with nearly $1 billion in tax and fee increases for highways and school buildings under a proposal unveiled Tuesday by House leaders.

    The bill would raise general sales taxes by 1.25 cents and fuel taxes by fours cents per gallon.

    . House Republicans present budget recommendations from expert panel (01/21/02)
    JEFFERSON CITY - The Blue Ribbon Panel convened last summer by Representative Catherine Hanaway presented its recommendations today.

    The panel suggested three main budget reforms. They including changes in the way revenue is estimated, strengthening legislative oversight of programs, and eliminate the concept of "core" budgeting.

    . Rohrbach pushes a bill that would stop private prison operation in Missouri (01/21/02)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Senator Rohrbach (R-California, MO) pushed his bill before a Senate committee today. The bill would ban private prisons in Missouri.

    Rohrback says private prisons have traditionally been poorly run, creating an inhumane environment for inmates. He also says communities have no control over where private prisons are located or what inmates they house.
