Transportation of nuclear waste upsets Governor Holden

November 1, 2001

State Capital Bureau

Governor Holden criticized the Department of Energy for the way that nuclear waste was transported through the state.

In April Holden wrote a letter to the DOE urging a halt of nuclear waste shipment on I-70 due to poor road conditions and traveling through St Louis and Kansas City.

According to Holden the DOE failed to abide by standards set by the state.

Just three weeks prior to the shipment the DOE issued a report saying that the waste would go through Iowa, not Missouri. When the nuclear waste surprisingly came to Missouri from Illinois it was the beginning of the St Louis rush hour.

Holden says that the state and the federal government need to work together.
