A Proposed Bill May Split Missouri's Electoral Votes

In light of the past presidential election, one Missouri representative has filed a bill that would split up our electoral votes. Seth Bachelier has the story from Jefferson City...

The argument for Gore supporters in Florida was simple, our votes aren't being counted.

So in Missouri, Democratic representative Juanita Walton has filed a bill that would split up the eleven electoral votes.

There would be nine separate electoral districts with the other two votes going to the candidate with the majority of the districts.

For all those who voted for Gore, Walton has something to say.

But, House Republican leader Catherine Hanaway says doing this would drive away presidential campaigning because fewer votes would be at stake.

Democratic representative Juanita Walton says she wants every vote to count.

So she has filed a bill that would split up Missouri's eleven electoral votes, doing away with the winner take all format.

The proposal calls for one electoral vote to be assigned to all nine congressional districts, with one vote going to the respective winner.

Then the two remaining electoral votes would go to the candidate with the majority of the nine districts.

But, House Republican leader Catherine Hanaway says she has a problem with this proposal.

Hanaway says that because candidates campaign where the most electoral votes are, Missouri would see less campaigning if this bill were made law.
