A spokesman for the Missouri Chamber of Commerce said he thinks the economic department's announcement that Missouri is in a recession may be premature.

Kellie Applen has the story in Jefferson City.

Director of Fiscal Affairs for the Missouri Chamber of Commerce, Ray McCarty said that while the economy may be leveling off, tax figures for the month of October are in fact higher than they were last year at this time.

McCarty said that is important to maintain a positive outlook and that state leaders should be encouraging consumers to return to their normal level of spending.

He said that spending tax payers' money on government programs doesn't result in true economic recovery and that the best way to stimulate the economy is to offer tax relief.
