Democrats say Republican proposed ban isn't possible

Democrats say a Republican call for an immediate ban on a polluting gas additive won't work. Aaron Cummins has more from Jefferson City--

The chemical in question... MTBE... it's used in reformulated gas to reduce air pollution... but at the same time... it's polluting ground water.

Republicans called on the governor to ban it.

But, St. Louis Democrat Wayne Goode says that's not possible.

Contents: Goode says asking for an immediate ban on MTBE is like asking for a new capitol building tomorrow... some things can't happen overnight.

Goode says this is a national issue... and should be resolved by the feds.

The EPA announced last week they'll take MTBE off the market by 2003.

The chemical... used in reformulated gas... has turned up in ground water twice in Missouri.

Now, Republicans say they want the chemical banned by the governor.
