A widely supported proposal to end the executions of the "mentally retarded" in Missouri

The Missouri House votes to exempt retarded people from the death penalty. Renny MacKay has more from Jefferson City.

Legislators from both parties, and both pro and anti death penalty supporters voiced support from the proposal. Among them, are behind the proposal. And, both prosecuting and defence attorneys are supporting the bill.

But, there are only two days left in the session.

St. Louis County Representative Brian May is anti death penalty but supports this proposal.

The proposal is attached to a bill that passed the House late Wednesday evening.

The Missouri House passed a proposal to join 14 other states that don't execute the "mentally retarded."

Renny MacKay has more from Jefferson City.

The mental retardation exemption is widely supported this year, largely because it has the support of the Missouri Prosecuting Attorneys.

Representative Mike Schilling is against the death penalty and has been working against it for years.

Though this is only the beginning for abolitionists, many people supporting this proposal are pro death penalty and wouldn't even support a moratorium.
