Hot Debate in First Day of Senate's Veto Session

September 16, 1999

Date: September 16, 1999

By: Kyle Elfrink

State Capital Bureau

The Senate began their debate on the hotly-contested partial-birth abortion bill. Kyle Elfrink has the story from Jefferson City.

Discussion and debate was highly-charged and often dramatic during the Missouri Senate's first day of discussion to override the partial-birth abortion bill. Opponent's of the bill, led by Ken Jacob of Columbia, continually questioned wording in the proposed bill.

Meanwhile, supporters of an override, including Ted House of St. Charles, stood their ground and pushed for a vote -- a vote that is expected to override the governor's veto. The House has already overridden the veto, but with debate raging on in the Senate, no vote had been taken -- and there was no telling when one would take place.
