Columbia Senator Proposes Substantial Tax Cuts
April 8, 1998 By: Caroline Noel State Capital Bureau
As we all know, it's tax time...but take heart, this year's tax bill may provide some generous cuts for the future. Caroline Noel reports from Jefferson City.
What has Senator Bill Kenney so thrilled is Columbia Senator Ken Jacob's proposal to raise the current income tax deduction for those who claim dependents. Currently $400 can be deducted. Jacob wants to raise that to at least $800. He says it can be accomplished if a current provision in the bill allowing a tax cut for those who pay private school tuitions is ELIMINATED. He says his amendment would provide more relief for everyone who cares for dependents. Jacob specifically stipulates that dependents can include children, the elderly and the handicapped.
Debate over passage of the Omnibus Tax Bill continues in the Senate.
Reporting from the Capital, this is Caroline Noel.
