Wife Opposes Residency Requirement for Police Officers

February 4, 1998

A St. Louis police officer may be fired for violating the requirement that officers must live within the city. State lawmakers heard testimony Wednesday from the officer's wife. Liz Cafer has the story in Jefferson City.

Dona Carroll moved to St. Louis county so her daughter could attend a special education program. Now her husband may lose his job for violating the residency requirement of the St. Louis Police Department.

Dona and her daughter, Jessica, attended a House Municipal Committee hearing to address lawmakers.

"In the city of St. Louis there's not that may neighborhoods that are livable at this point. So why should they live in the smae neighborhood they're patrolling and expect their families to live there too?"

But some representatives say they don't want to override the wishes of St. Louis citizens, who voted in favor of the residency requirement. Proponents of the bill say that if officers have the freedom to chose where they live, fewer officers would leave their jobs. Reporting in Jefferson City, I'm Liz Cafer.
