Bill Would Pay Student Loans for Certain Degree Programs

State Capital Bureau A bill that would forgive loans for students going into degree programs of high need passed through the House Higher Education Committee Wednesday. Liz Cafer has the story in Jefferson City.

The bill would encourage students to get degrees in areas with a shortage of qualified employees.

Students would sign a contract their first year of higher education to enter certain degree programs AND to work in the state of Missouri after graduation.

Those who complete the requirements would have their student loans repaid by the state.

But some lawmakers say it may be difficult to predict the market, which could result in an oversaturation of graduates in some areas.

House Speaker Steve Gaw, who sponsored the bill, disagrees.


"I don't think that that's likely to happen because we are annually assessing what fields are in high need. I don't think it changes that rapidly."

Students would have to work in the state of Missouri for 5 years to have the entire loan repaid. In Jefferson City, I'm Liz Cafer.
